Marilyn, thanks for your feedback. The shaft on the right side is there + it has the proper crank shaft for a treadle. We will be buying a treadle for it, so thanks for the recommendation!

I have a 8x12 C&P OS. I run the press with a flat belt on the flywheel and it is not a problem. I turn it by hand for proofs and such and I still have all of my original fingers and thumbs. You can also run the motor from the right side of the press if it has or you can find a pulley (as long as the shaft to put it on has not been cut off). If the press does not have a crank shaft for the treadle, I can refer you to some press-people to contact that may have one. Treadles are available thru Hern Iron Works (they are replicas of the origianl treadle). The press looks like it is in pretty good shape and looks to be a good find. Congrats and good luck!

Nancy, I've got a C&P NS with a v-belt on the flywheel and have no problems hand-operating the flywheeel when running single impressions. I won't pretend to know anything about electric motors, but know that mine remains in neutral until started and can run in either direction. The belt doesn't really get in the way at all.

I am not that experienced with C&P old style...but I don't think that having the motor run the flywheel directly is a good idea.. you will often want to just hand run it for proofs, etc. That belt will get in the way.
